Chapter 1

Mother Returns From London And Finds Her Little Son Crawling Beneath The Table While Her Husband Protects His Mistress’s Child.
Madeline Vale stood in the doorway of her Buckhead mansion with London rain still clinging to her beige coat.
Her black suitcase slipped from her fingers and crashed onto the polished marble floor.
The sound exploded through the foyer.
Under the dining table, four-year-old Liam flinched so hard his thin shoulders struck the chair leg. He scrambled backward on dirty hands and knees, barefoot, shaking, face smeared with something dry and dark.
Madeline stopped breathing.
Across the marble dining area, Jeffrey finally looked up from his phone.
He did not stand.
He did not look ashamed first.
He looked annoyed.
“Keep him away from the child.”
The child.
Not Liam.
Not their son.
At the table, Noelle Vale sat in cream silk and pearls, calmly feeding cake to a clean little boy in a white shirt. Austin laughed as frosting touched his mouth.
Beside Jeffrey sat Cynthia in a red dress, too relaxed inside Madeline’s home, her hand resting near Jeffrey’s sleeve.
Madeline dropped to her knees.
“Liam?”
Her voice broke.
The boy recoiled from her.
He covered part of his face and whimpered like he did not know whether she had come to save him or hurt him.
Madeline crawled forward slowly.
“It’s Mommy.”
Liam did not come.
Noelle lifted another spoonful of cake toward Austin.
“Don’t let that boy sit at the table. He’s used to eating on the floor.”
The words entered Madeline like ice.
She froze.
Then she looked up.
Cynthia leaned toward Jeffrey with a smug half-smile.
“Austin deserves a peaceful home.”
Madeline rose slowly from the marble.
Her grief became still.
Her hand slipped into her coat pocket and found her phone.
Recording.
She angled it low by her side.
“Liam… it’s Mommy,” she said softly.
Then she looked at the three adults.
“Say that again.”
Jeffrey finally stood.

Too late, he realized she was no longer crying.
