Chapter 8

Jeffrey tried a different voice.

The reasonable one.

The husband voice.

The one he used when staff were nearby or when he needed Madeline to doubt the evidence of her own eyes.

“Maddie,” he said softly.

She hated that nickname now.

“We can discuss this privately.”

Madeline looked at him.

“No.”

“Not in front of the children.”

She glanced at Liam under the table and Austin at the chair.

“You remembered them at an interesting time.”

Cynthia stepped closer to Austin and placed a hand on his shoulder.

The boy looked up at her.

“Mommy?”

Madeline watched the small exchange.

There was love there.

Maybe selfish love.

Maybe blind love.

But real enough.

That made Cynthia more accountable, not less.

She knew how to protect her own child from discomfort.

She simply did not care that Liam was being crushed by it.

Jeffrey lowered his voice.

“You are tired. You flew all night.”

Madeline smiled faintly.

“And yet I can still see.”

His jaw tightened.

Noelle said, “You will not destroy this family over a difficult week.”

Madeline turned.

“A difficult week?”

Noelle lifted her chin.

“He needed discipline.”

Liam curled around the red bus.

Madeline’s voice became very quiet.

“Did discipline include keeping him off the chairs?”

Noelle did not answer.

“Did it include taking his shoes?”

No answer.

“Did it include letting another child eat dessert while he watched from the floor?”

Noelle’s eyes flashed.

“He refused dinner.”

“What dinner?”

Silence again.

Jeffrey snapped, “Enough questions.”

Madeline looked at him.

“You had nine days to answer them by taking care of your son.”

Cynthia’s lips parted.

“Our arrangement was none of his concern.”

Madeline’s eyes moved to her.

“Our arrangement?”

Cynthia froze.

Jeffrey turned sharply.

“Cynthia.”

The recording caught his warning.

Madeline stepped half a pace closer.

“What arrangement?”

Cynthia’s face closed.

Noelle looked furious.

Jeffrey’s composure cracked.

“It means nothing.”

Madeline kept the phone angled.

“Everything means something when a child is under the table.”

Austin began to cry softly now.

Cynthia lifted him from the chair.

Madeline did not stop her.

She only watched the contrast.

Austin carried immediately.

Liam still afraid to crawl out.

That image alone said more than any confession.

Read Chapter 9 👉 Because Cynthia almost exposed the arrangement, and Jeffrey’s warning proved there was more in the house than neglect.
