Chapter 9

Madeline moved toward the black staircase, not away from Liam, but toward the wall panel beside it.
Jeffrey stiffened.
“Where are you going?”
She looked at the small control screen near the staircase.
“Checking whether the cameras work.”
His face changed.
Fast.
Noelle stood.
“You will not tamper with house security.”
Madeline almost laughed.
“My house security?”
Jeffrey’s voice sharpened.
“Madeline.”
She stopped before touching the panel.
Good.
That reaction was enough for now.
If she opened the system too soon, Jeffrey might claim she deleted something. If she waited, she could preserve the moment and bring in someone who knew how to secure it properly.
Not police yet.
Not legal consequences yet.
Not a custody fight in front of a terrified child.
Just proof.
She turned away from the panel and returned toward the dining table.
Jeffrey looked relieved for half a second.
Madeline saw it.
Saved it.
Recorded it.
Liam was still beneath the table with the red bus clutched to his chest.
Madeline sat slowly on the marble several feet away.
Not caring about the cold.
Not caring about the dressing from the cake plate smeared near her coat hem.
She placed her phone screen-down beside her thigh, still recording audio.
Then she opened both hands.
Empty.
Safe.
“Liam,” she whispered. “I’m not going to make you come out.”
His eyes stayed on her.
“You can stay there as long as you need. I’m staying too.”
Jeffrey exhaled sharply.
“This is ridiculous.”
Madeline did not look at him.
“Then leave.”
The room froze.
Jeffrey blinked.
“What?”
Madeline kept her eyes on Liam.
“If I’m ridiculous, leave the room.”
Noelle said, “This is my son’s home.”
Madeline looked up now.
“No. It is Liam’s home. And every adult in it will stop making him afraid.”
Cynthia clutched Austin tighter.
Jeffrey stepped closer.
“You don’t get to give orders after disappearing for nine days.”
Madeline rose again, slow and controlled.
“You sent me away.”
He went silent.
She looked at the phone, then back at him.
“And I want you to explain why.”
Jeffrey’s face drained of color.
Noelle’s eyes cut toward Cynthia.
Cynthia looked down.
For the first time, all three adults shared the same fear.
Not of Madeline’s anger.
