Chapter 5

Noelle stood.

The movement was elegant, practiced, and meant to reclaim authority.

Her cream outfit fell perfectly around her.

Pearls rested against her throat.

She looked like a woman born to host dinners where other people apologized for bleeding on carpets.

“That is enough,” Noelle said.

Madeline did not move.

“No. Enough was before my son learned to crawl away from adults.”

Noelle’s mouth tightened.

“You are emotional from travel.”

Madeline almost smiled.

There it was.

Emotional.

The first defense of people caught doing something indefensible.

Jeffrey picked it up instantly.

“You’ve been gone over a week. You don’t understand what we’ve been dealing with.”

Madeline looked at Liam again.

He had pulled his knees close to his chest beneath the table.

His eyes were fixed on Noelle’s shoes.

Not Jeffrey.

Not Cynthia.

Noelle.

Madeline saw it.

Noelle saw Madeline see it.

The older woman’s posture stiffened.

Madeline’s voice lowered.

“Liam, honey, did Grandma make you stay under there?”

Noelle snapped, “Do not coach him.”

Liam covered his ears.

Sophisticated cruelty became very plain when a child reacted before the adult finished speaking.

Madeline took one slow breath.

In.

Out.

She would not ask Liam to testify from under a table.

Not now.

Not while shaking.

She turned back to the adults.

“Who fed him today?”

Noelle scoffed.

“He refused what we served.”

“What did you serve him?”

Silence.

Cynthia looked at Jeffrey.

Jeffrey said, “Food. What kind of question is that?”

“A simple one.”

Noelle lifted her wineglass.

“We are not your servants, Madeline.”

Madeline looked at her.

“No. But while I was gone, you were the adult in the house.”

Noelle’s eyes flashed.

“I am the reason this house still has standards.”

Madeline glanced down at the spilled crumbs near Austin’s cake plate.

“And Liam did not meet them?”

Noelle’s nostrils flared.

“He behaves like an animal when indulged like one.”

Madeline’s hand tightened around the phone.

There it was.

Clear.

Recorded.

Jeffrey whispered harshly, “Mom.”

Too late.

Cynthia sat frozen.

Noelle realized only after speaking that the room had changed.

Madeline’s face lost the last trace of visible heartbreak.

Her voice became almost gentle.

“Thank you.”

Noelle’s eyes narrowed.

“For what?”

Madeline lifted the phone slightly.

May you like

“For saying it yourself.”
