Chapter 22 - Charles says what he saw

My father took longer.

Charles preferred silence to apology.

He stopped calling for nine months.

Then sent birthday gifts to Gigi through Noah.

I returned the first.

Accepted the second after Noah asked:

“Is this about safety or punishing him?”

I hated that question.

Eventually, Charles asked to meet.

Coffee shop.

No Victoria.

No Arthur.

He sat across from me.

Looked older.

“I saw him slap her.”

“Yes.”

“I knew it was wrong.”

I waited.

“Then why did you say children need boundaries?”

He stared at his coffee.

“Because the room was exploding.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I wanted it to stop.”

“Then you should have told Arthur to leave.”

“Yes.”

There.

No argument.

“I thought if I sided with you, your mother would go after Arthur and the entire party would turn into a disaster.”

“It already had.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“I have spent forty years believing the person who keeps the room calm is the responsible one.”

I said:

“Sometimes the responsible person ruins the room.”

He nodded.

That became the best thing either of us said.

Charles apologized to Gigi when she was four.

Not at two.

At four, she could understand:

“Grandpa should have helped Mommy keep you safe.”

No details she did not need.

She said:

“Okay.”

Then asked for juice.

Children do not always provide emotional closure on schedule.
