Chapter 3 - The video

My cousin Natalie had recorded the slap.

Accidentally.

She had been filming Charles standing behind his cake.

The camera was already rolling when Gigi reached for the ribbon.

Natalie did not send it to me.

She sent it to police.

That choice probably saved all of us from months of arguing about whether memory was accurate.

The video was sixteen seconds long.

Gigi reaches.

My voice:

“Gigi, leave that, sweetheart.”

Arthur lunges.

Open hand.

Contact.

Gigi cries.

Arthur:

“A naughty child needs to be taught a lesson!”

Clear.

No ambiguity about a hand accidentally brushing a toddler.

Then the video shifted.

Natalie lowered the phone when people started shouting.

It captured mostly torsos and table edges.

But audio continued.

My:

“She’s only two years old! What is wrong with you?!”

Victoria:

“That’s enough, Clara. You’re ruining the party.”

Charles:

“Children need boundaries.”

Then the image rose again.

My kick.

Also clear.

Victoria was not striking me.

Not holding Gigi.

Not actively attacking.

She had moved into my path and reached toward my arm.

I kicked her.

That mattered.

When Detective Maria Flores showed me the recording two days later, she paused after the slap.

“Do you agree this is what happened?”

“Yes.”

Then played my kick.

“Do you agree this is what happened?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Were you afraid Mrs. Price was about to injure your daughter?”

“No.”

“Were you trying to stop Mr. Price from striking the child again?”

“Not at that exact second.”

“Why did you kick your mother?”

I wanted a better answer.

I did not have one.

“I was furious.”

She nodded.

Not approving.

Documenting.

“That distinction is important.”

“I understand.”

I did.

Arthur had assaulted Gigi.

I had assaulted Victoria.

Context mattered.

They were not equal acts.

May you like

Neither became invisible because the other was worse.

That was an unpleasantly adult truth.
