Chapter 10 - The Library DoorDaniel ordered Officer Delaney to place his weapon on the floor.

Captain Price held a second gun near the library entrance.
Claire stood between them with her injured arm immobilized.
The fireplace consumed Robert’s trust documents page by page.
Daniel smiled.
“Your father thought paper could protect you.”
“The original trust is already recorded.”
“Not the sisters’ trust.”
“Police photographed it.”
“Copies can be challenged.”
“The notarization can be verified.”
Daniel looked toward Captain Price.
“Martin’s seal becomes worthless when he is charged with Elaine’s murder.”
Claire understood.
Daniel planned to destroy Martin’s credibility, blame him for the crash, and argue that Elaine’s deed was fraudulent.
Then Robert’s later trust would control the property—unless Claire died.
Vanessa might inherit management temporarily.
Daniel could pressure her again.
The plan remained complex because Daniel refused to see the simplest truth.
The lake house was not his.
It had never been his.
Officer Delaney lowered his weapon carefully.
“Daniel, the building is surrounded.”
“No. Your teams are at the filtration plant.”
He had sent Martin’s false location to divide police resources.
Captain Price monitored dispatch through his old credentials.
Daniel moved toward Claire.
“Give me the emergency archive password.”
“I don’t know it.”
“Your father left it in the envelope.”
“No.”
He struck the side of her face.
Pain flashed through her bruises.
Delaney moved.
Price raised his gun.
“Stay down.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You need the archive because Robert recorded your Silver Crest payments.”
“I need it because your father stole millions from everyone around him.”
“You keep using his crimes to justify yours.”
“He ruined Vanessa.”
“You found the wound and kept cutting it open.”
Daniel’s expression twisted.
He grabbed her throat with one hand.
The same terror returned.
The stone fireplace.
The floor.
Vanessa smiling.
Claire forced herself to look directly at him.
“Do it again.”
He hesitated.
“Every camera in this library is recording.”
His eyes moved toward the shelves.
“Your first attack triggered the archive. What do you think the second one triggers?”
Daniel released her.
The threat had worked because it matched Robert’s design.
Claire did not know whether another system existed.
She only needed Daniel to believe it might.
Officer Delaney lunged.
Captain Price fired.
The bullet struck the wooden desk.
Delaney tackled Daniel into the shelves.
Claire dropped behind the sofa as Price aimed again.
A section of library wall opened.
Martin stepped out holding the blue ledger.
He struck Price’s wrist with a metal flashlight. The weapon fell.
Daniel kicked Delaney away and reached for it.
Claire grabbed the fireplace poker with her uninjured hand and swept the gun across the floor.
It slid beneath the burning document slot.
Sprinklers activated.
Water filled the room.
The fire died.
Tactical officers breached the front entrance.
Daniel ran toward the hidden passage.
Martin blocked him.
The two men collided against the open wall.
Daniel pulled a knife.
“Where’s the final page?” he demanded.
Martin stared.
“You already have it.”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
Claire heard.
The missing page from Elaine’s blue ledger was not lost.
Daniel had removed it.
Captain Price attempted to crawl toward his gun.
Officer Delaney restrained him.
Daniel slashed toward Martin and escaped through the passage before tactical officers reached the library. The tunnel door locked behind him.
Teams pursued from outside.
Martin leaned against the shelves, blood running from a cut along his arm.
Claire looked at the blue ledger.
“Why did you run?”
“I thought the police team was compromised.”
“You could have called Delaney.”
“I didn’t know whether he was part of Price’s network.”
“You keep deciding secrecy is safer.”
Martin closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Were you driving Mom’s car?”
“No.”
“Who pushed you into the lake?”
“Robert.”
Claire felt the answer even before he continued.
Robert followed Elaine to stop her from leaving with Claire. He drove the company vehicle. During the storm, he struck the rear of Elaine’s car.
He claimed afterward that the impact was accidental.
Martin escaped through the broken passenger window.
He tried to pull Elaine out but could not release her seat belt.
Robert reached the shore and watched.
“Did he try to help?” Claire asked.
Martin’s silence answered.
“Why protect him?”
“He threatened to say I killed her. He had the company, the police captain, and the money.”
“You took six million.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I believed I could use it to protect you and Vanessa.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You bought silence and called it protection.”
Martin accepted it.
He opened the blue ledger.
The missing final page had contained Elaine’s signed statement naming Robert as the person threatening her.
Daniel removed it from the dock compartment months earlier.
The page could prove Robert’s motive and expose Captain Price’s cover-up.
Daniel carried it because it also contained something about Silver Crest.
“What?” Delaney asked.
Martin looked toward Claire.
“Elaine identified the original investors behind the resort consortium.”
“Leonard Ross?”
“Yes.”
“Who else?”
Martin turned the ledger toward them.
One name had been underlined twice.
Daniel Mercer.
The company called Silver Crest had existed before Daniel married Vanessa.
He was not merely a consultant recruited to acquire the house.
He was one of its founders.
His relationship with Vanessa had been a long-term operation from the beginning.
Then Vanessa called Officer Delaney.
Her voice came through his phone.
“Daniel contacted me.”
“Where is he?”
“He wants me to meet him at the old marina.”
“Why?”
“He says he has proof Claire killed Dad.”
Claire stared.
Robert died from a heart attack inside the lake house while Claire was away collecting his prescription.
