Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s PasswordVanessa returned to the hospital alone before dawn.

Her mascara had smeared beneath her eyes. She no longer carried the confident satisfaction she showed at the lake house.
Officer Delaney allowed her inside after confirming the conversation would be recorded.
Claire’s hospital bed had been raised. Martin sat near the sealed envelope. The encrypted laptop remained closed.
“Where is Daniel?” Claire asked.
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“Meeting his attorney.”
“At four in the morning?”
“He says the police are twisting everything.”
“Did he tell you to get the flash drive?”
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Martin.
That was answer enough.
Claire spoke softly.
“Dad left a medication file.”
Vanessa became completely still.
“It requires your password.”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“Dad said you knew.”
“He lied about me constantly.”
Martin opened Robert’s written instructions.
“The password is connected to the night Vanessa found Robert collapsed beside the kitchen sink.”
Claire remembered the incident.
Vanessa had been visiting the lake house. Robert became dizzy after taking his evening heart medication. Vanessa called Claire and claimed he had accidentally taken a double dose.
Claire rushed him to the hospital.
Doctors adjusted his prescription.
Two weeks later, Vanessa stopped visiting completely.
“What happened that night?” Claire asked.
Vanessa sat near the window.
“Dad accused me of switching his pills.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel?”
“No.”
The second answer came too quickly.
Claire watched her sister’s hands.
Vanessa twisted her wedding ring.
“Dad became paranoid.”
“Then why do you know the password?”
“I don’t.”
Martin placed a note on the table.
Robert had written one clue.
THE WORD SHE USED WHEN SHE DECIDED I DESERVED IT.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
Claire remembered an argument months before the collapse. Vanessa called Robert controlling after he refused to guarantee Daniel a board position.
She shouted one word repeatedly.
Justice.
Martin entered it.
The medication file opened.
Inside was a recording from the lake house kitchen.
Vanessa stood beside Robert’s pill organizer while Daniel watched from the doorway.
Daniel handed her a small plastic bag containing replacement tablets.
“They won’t kill him,” he said. “They’ll make him look confused.”
Vanessa hesitated.
“What if something goes wrong?”
“Then Claire takes over sooner, and we pressure her.”
“She’ll never sign.”
Daniel approached her.
“She will when she understands how alone she is.”
Vanessa replaced three blue tablets with similar-looking white pills.
Robert’s hidden camera recorded everything.
Claire felt something inside her go cold.
“You drugged him.”
Vanessa began crying.
“They were vitamins.”
“You interfered with heart medication.”
“Daniel said it would only weaken him.”
“And when Dad collapsed?”
“I called you.”
“After how long?”
Vanessa looked down.
The video timestamp provided the answer.
Twenty-three minutes.
She had watched their father struggling on the floor for nearly half an hour before calling Claire.
Officer Delaney’s expression hardened.
“Ms. Mercer, you need legal counsel.”
Vanessa stood.
“No. You don’t understand.”
Claire’s throat hurt as she spoke.
“You had the same choice at the lake house. You watched Daniel attack me.”
“I was scared.”
“You smiled.”
“I hated you in that moment.”
The honesty silenced the room.
Vanessa cried harder.
“Dad trusted you. He left you the house. Daniel loved you more every time you refused him because you were the obstacle he needed to beat. I became invisible inside my own marriage.”
“You punished me for what he did to you.”
“Yes.”
Officer Delaney stepped closer.
“Did Daniel instruct you to switch Robert Hale’s medication?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know removing the pills could cause a cardiac event?”
“He said Robert’s doctor would blame age.”
“Did Silver Crest know?”
Vanessa looked toward the closed door.
“Gavin knew.”
The developer’s attorney had supplied Daniel with photographs of Robert’s pills and dosage schedule.
Silver Crest wanted Robert declared incapacitated. Vanessa would receive temporary trust authority and approve the property transfer before Claire could challenge it.
The plan failed because Robert had already amended the trust.
Then he died eight months later.
The official cause was a heart attack.
Claire looked at Martin.
“Was an autopsy performed?”
“No. Robert’s physician certified natural death.”
“Who selected the funeral home?”
“Daniel.”
Vanessa covered her face.
“I didn’t kill Dad.”
Claire answered.
“You helped create the conditions.”
Vanessa looked toward her.
“Daniel has the original medication bottle.”
Officer Delaney stopped writing.
“Where?”
“He keeps it in a safe inside the Silver Crest office.”
“Why preserve it?”
“Insurance.”
Against whom?
Vanessa answered before anyone asked.
“Gavin. Daniel records everyone.”
The conspiracy was not built on trust.
Each participant collected evidence against the others.
Claire leaned back against the hospital pillow.
“Will you give us the safe code?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“If I do, Daniel will destroy me.”
Claire looked at the bruises on her arms.
“He already did.”
Vanessa whispered six numbers.
Martin wrote them down.
Then the hospital door opened.
Daniel stood in the hallway with two uniformed police officers.
He held a court order.
“Vanessa,” he said, “step away from my wife.”
Officer Delaney read the document.
It ordered Vanessa transferred into emergency psychiatric custody based on claims she had suffered a violent breakdown and attacked both Claire and Robert.
Daniel had prepared the narrative in advance.
