He also demanded safe passage and twenty million dollars.
If authorities refused, he would rupture the chemical tanks and collapse the chamber.
Gavin Ross stood behind him holding a gun.
The attorney’s face showed panic.
He had not expected explosives.
“You said we were retrieving property,” Gavin whispered.
Daniel looked at him.
“We are creating leverage.”
“You’ll destroy the patents.”
“They’re worthless to us now.”
Again, Daniel converted every object into something disposable once he could not own it.
The federal commander evacuated nearby homes.
Environmental teams prepared containment barriers.
Claire remained connected from the command center.
Vanessa asked to speak to Daniel.
Officer Delaney hesitated.
Claire nodded.
Vanessa faced her husband through the screen.
“You lost.”
Daniel laughed.
“You’re still wearing my name.”
“Not for long.”
“You think Claire will protect you?”
“No.”
The answer surprised him.
“I think Claire will tell the truth about me. I think the court will decide what happens. I think Mom’s trust will keep me alive without giving me power over her.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You sound pathetic.”
“I sound like someone you can’t use anymore.”
He raised the remote.
Claire spoke.
“Daniel, Gavin removed the final-page original from your coat at the marina.”
Daniel turned toward Gavin.
The attorney froze.
Claire continued.
“He contacted police before entering the laboratory.”
It was a bluff.
Claire had no evidence Gavin cooperated.
But the relationship between the men was already fractured.
Daniel pointed his gun toward Gavin.
“You took it?”
Gavin lifted both hands.
“She’s dividing us.”
“She told Price the same thing.”
“Because you recorded everyone.”
Daniel looked toward the contractor nearest him.
The man avoided his eyes.
Paranoia spread faster than tactical force could.
Claire kept speaking.
“Silver Crest’s investors have already identified you as the sole architect.”
Daniel’s face twisted.
“They funded everything.”
“They say you forged their authorization.”
Gavin stepped farther away.
“They will say that.”
Daniel turned.
“You drafted the contracts.”
“At your direction.”
One contractor lowered his weapon.
“I was hired for recovery, not terrorism.”
Daniel aimed at him.
The federal team used the distraction to enter the side corridor.
A shot struck the laboratory ceiling.
Gavin ran behind a tank.
The contractor tackled Daniel’s gun arm.
The remote fell.
Daniel kicked free and reached for it.
Vanessa screamed through the screen.
Claire remained still.
Officer Delaney’s technician had already jammed the remote frequency.
The charges could not receive Daniel’s signal.
He did not know.
Daniel seized the device and pressed it repeatedly.
Nothing happened.
For the first time, terror entered his face.
He had built his power on making other people believe only he controlled the next disaster.
Now the button did nothing.
Federal officers rushed him.
Daniel escaped through the underwater lock before they reached him, sealing the door behind him.
Divers pursued.
Gavin surrendered.
The contractors dropped their weapons.
The chemical tanks remained intact.
Daniel’s diving beacon disappeared beneath the lake.
Search teams found an abandoned air tank near the southern shore.
No body.
No footprints.
He had prepared another escape route.
Gavin agreed to provide Silver Crest records. He claimed Daniel held copies in an offshore archive and could still release manipulated evidence against Claire, Vanessa, Martin, and Robert’s public foundation.
The immediate environmental threat ended.
The information war remained.
Claire and Vanessa met in person the following morning under supervised conditions.
Vanessa’s bruises came from Daniel’s grip during earlier arguments she had hidden.
Claire noticed them without using them to erase what Vanessa had done.
“I’m entering a treatment program,” Vanessa said.
“That’s necessary.”
“I’m also pleading guilty to whatever charges apply.”
“That is between you and the court.”
“Do you hate me?”
Claire looked at her sister.
“Yes.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I also remember you teaching me to drive. I remember you sleeping beside me after Mom died. Both exist.”
Vanessa nodded.
She did not ask Claire to choose one.
The Hale Sisters Trust entered independent administration. Claire would not return to the lake house until security threats ended.
Vanessa surrendered residence rights.
Martin entered formal investigation for obstruction and concealment.
Captain Price remained under guard.
Gavin became a cooperating witness.
No final charges had been resolved.
Daniel remained missing.
Robert’s patents transferred to the public foundation.
The story appeared to be moving toward accountability rather than revenge.
Then Officer Delaney received a forensic report from the hidden chamber.
The notarized public-foundation transfer used Martin’s seal.
The document’s ink was less than six months old.
Robert supposedly signed it before his death eight months earlier.
The signature was genuine.
The paper was not.
Someone had created the transfer after Robert died using a preserved signed page.
Claire looked toward Martin’s interview feed.
He had access to Robert’s signature and notary seal.
If the transfer was invalid, the patents might still belong to the Hale Sisters Trust.
Silver Crest’s prize remained alive.
Martin asked to speak with Claire.
“There is another envelope,” he said.
“Where?”
“Inside Robert’s coffin.”
Claire stared.
Her father’s body had been buried beside Elaine.
Martin continued.
“He told me to retrieve it only if the patent transfer was challenged.”
“Why didn’t you mention it?”
“Because the envelope names the person who helped Daniel enter the family.”
Claire felt cold.
“Who?”
