Chapter 9 - The Deed Beneath the WaterElaine’s recording described a steel cylinder hidden beneath the old diving platform.
The current platform had been rebuilt twice, but the original concrete foundation remained underwater.
A dive team searched at sunrise.
Claire watched from the lake house window with her arm immobilized and bruises still dark across her face. Officer Delaney stood nearby.
Vanessa had been moved to a protected interview location.
Martin remained missing.
Daniel and Captain Price were still at large.
The divers recovered a rusted cylinder chained beneath the foundation.
Inside were two notarized documents sealed in wax.
The first created the Hale Sisters Trust.
Beneficiaries: Vanessa Elaine Hale and Claire Margaret Hale.
Equal interests.
The second deed transferred the lake house, land, patents, and water rights into that trust.
Elaine signed.
Robert signed as witness.
Martin notarized it.
Date: six months before Elaine died.
Claire stared at Martin’s seal.
“He knew.”
“Yes,” Delaney said.
“Dad knew.”
“Yes.”
After Elaine’s death, Robert recorded a different deed placing everything inside his own corporate trust. He later converted it into the conservation structure naming Claire as sole manager.
The Hale Sisters Trust had never been dissolved.
Legally, Vanessa might still own half.
The trust’s violence-forfeiture clause came from Robert’s later document.
It might not apply to Elaine’s original trust.
Daniel could still reach the property through Vanessa.
Claire felt fury toward Robert.
His protection had been built on another act of control.
He believed Vanessa’s marriage made her dangerous, so he erased her ownership rather than reveal the truth and seek legal safeguards.
That erasure helped create the resentment Daniel exploited.
None of it excused Vanessa’s crimes.
It explained part of the wound.
Officer Delaney turned the second page.
Elaine’s trust contained its own protection clause.
Any beneficiary knowingly assisting coercion, fraud, or violence lost management authority but retained a nontransferable support interest.
Vanessa could receive income for basic needs under independent supervision.
She could not sell, mortgage, or transfer the property.
Daniel still received nothing.
Elaine had protected both daughters differently from Robert.
She separated survival from control.
Claire asked to speak with Vanessa.
The video connected.
Vanessa read the original trust slowly.
“Mom left me half.”
“Yes.”
“Dad told me she left everything to him.”
“He lied.”
Vanessa began crying.
Not because she regained wealth.
Because the story she built her hatred around had been false.
“You thought I stole it,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
“You still chose Daniel’s plan.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa touched the screen.
“What happens now?”
“Independent lawyers review the trust. You cooperate with police. You stop pretending being hurt gave you permission to hurt me.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I will.”
Claire did not promise forgiveness.
The dive cylinder contained one more object: a small cassette marked FINAL DRIVE.
The recording began with Elaine speaking inside a car.
Wind and rain struck the windows.
“Robert has discovered the sisters’ deed. He says Vanessa will be influenced by anyone offering love. He wants Claire protected as sole heir.”
Another voice answered.
Martin.
“You cannot keep the property divided if Robert controls the company.”
“I can leave him.”
“He won’t allow it.”
“Will you help me?”
Silence.
Then Martin said, “Yes.”
The recording jumped.
Elaine sounded frightened now.
“Someone is following us.”
Martin answered.
“That’s Robert’s car.”
The tape distorted.
Brakes screeched.
Elaine screamed.
Then the sound of impact.
Water.
The recording continued underwater for several seconds before ending.
Martin had been inside Elaine’s car when it entered the lake.
Yet he survived.
He never mentioned being present.
Officer Delaney requested old hospital records.
Martin Hale had been treated that night for hypothermia and a fractured wrist under the false name Matthew Lane.
The hospital was twenty miles away.
He escaped from the car.
Elaine did not.
Claire looked toward the lake.
“Martin was with her.”
“He may know who forced them off the road.”
“He may have been the target too.”
“Or the driver.”
The tape placed him inside the vehicle, but not necessarily behind the wheel.
A second car pushed them.
Robert’s company vehicle followed.
Captain Price buried the evidence.
Before they could trace Martin again, the lake house alarm activated.
The library safe opened remotely.
Robert’s original trust documents began feeding into the fireplace through a hidden mechanical slot.
Someone was burning them.
Claire and Delaney ran inside.
Flames consumed the first pages.
Claire reached toward the controls, but Daniel stepped from behind the library door holding a gun.
His shirt was wet from the lake tunnel.
Captain Price stood behind him.
Daniel aimed at Claire.
