Chapter 18 - NORA GIVES SOPHIE THE EARRINGS

Rebecca’s earrings stayed in Box 118 until the criminal case no longer needed the box documented.

Then Nora asked what the trust instructions said.

The velvet pouch had a note:

For Sophie when she’s old enough not to eat jewelry.

Rebecca humor.

Nora laughed.

“So not four.”

Correct.

The earrings remained in secure storage.

Sophie objected.

“Mommy mine.”

“Yes.”

“Earrings mine.”

“Later.”

“Why?”

“Because small jewelry and four-year-olds are a bad combination.”

She survived the injustice.

More important:

The photograph returned.

I almost framed Rebecca’s letter too.

Stopped.

Rebecca specifically wrote that she did not want to control from the grave.

Turning every sentence into household scripture would violate the spirit while worshipping the text.

The letter went into my private file.

I read it when needed.

Not at dinner.

Not to Sophie.

One day she asked:

“What Mommy words say?”

I gave the child version.

“She wanted the things she left you to stay yours.”

“Picture?”

“Yes.”

“Money?”

“Some money when you’re older.”

“How much?”

“Adult answer.”

She sighed.

May you like

“Boring.”

Perfect.
