One of the most dangerous family myths became:
Celeste was seconds from disappearing forever.
Maybe.
But evidence did not prove success was guaranteed.
Airport screening.
Travel documentation.
Questions about a stepmother traveling internationally with a child.
The modified consent form might have been challenged.
Airline staff might have called me.
Border authorities might have stopped them.
Or not.
No one could honestly promise what would have happened.
The crime did not depend on successful escape.
The plan and confinement mattered.
Celeste’s lawyers emphasized uncertainty.
Correctly.
Mason had even texted:
What if airline calls Daniel?
Celeste:
Then we deal with it.
She did not have an airtight escape strategy.
She had desperation.
A ticket.
A false paper.
A belief I would negotiate before involving police.
That belief nearly put Sophie on a plane.
But nearly is not certainty.
