Chapter 21 - CELESTE’S LETTER TO SOPHIE
Celeste wrote an apology.
First draft was rejected by the child therapist.
Sophie,
I am sorry things got out of control.
Passive.
Then:
I was scared your father would take everything from me.
Adult burden.
Rejected.
Third attempt:
Sophie,
I put you inside the suitcase when you said no.
I locked it.
You were scared and I did not let you out.
That was wrong.
You did not cause it by crying, holding your mom’s picture, or saying you wanted your dad.
I also told you things about your mom and money that were grown-up problems.
You did not need to solve them.
You do not have to answer me.
Better.
Dr. Morris asked Sophie:
“Do you want to hear it?”
“No.”
Then two weeks later:
“Maybe.”
She listened.
At the end:
“Is Celeste sad?”
“Probably.”
“Do I fix?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Then:
“Can letter stay here?”
“Yes.”
