Chapter 15 - Grandpa loses the barbecue
Dad’s biggest consequence was surprisingly small.
He stopped hosting.
Not by court order.
People stopped coming.
Aunt Karen held the next cookout.
Melissa declined Dad’s invitation the following month.
Uncle Tom came once.
His wife didn’t.
Children disappeared from the backyard.
Dad called it:
“Rachel’s boycott.”
It wasn’t coordinated.
That almost made it worse for him.
People had seen the messages.
The barbecue had stopped feeling harmless.
Aunt Karen told me:
“I don’t want to sit there wondering which kid is the joke.”
Good.
Uncle Tom resisted longer.
He said:
“Frank’s always been like that.”
Karen answered:
“That’s not a defense.”
They argued.
Not my job.
Dad continued grilling for himself and Mom.
The charcoal grill stayed.
No symbolic destruction.
No one took the house.
No social exile.
Just fewer guests.
