Chapter 14 - Lily became afraid of water glasses

The legal case moved.

Lily developed a problem nobody in court could fix.

She stopped letting me drink anything she had not watched being opened.

At breakfast:

She stared at my coffee.

At dinner:

My water.

Once Nora handed me lemonade.

Lily slapped the glass from my hand.

It broke.

She started screaming.

Not spoken screaming.

A raw vocal sound and frantic signing.

“No. Poison. No.”

I crouched.

Held both hands where she could see them.

“Safe.”

She shook her head violently.

“No.”

I wanted to show her the bottle.

Prove.

Instead her therapist taught us a different approach.

Safety cannot become a ritual the child must personally supervise.

If every drink required Lily’s inspection, we would turn her vigilance into responsibility.

So we created ordinary routines.

Adults prepare adult drinks.

Lily can ask.

We answer once.

We do not perform endless proof.

Hard.

The first time I drank coffee after she objected, she cried.

I drank anyway.

Then stayed alive.

That sounds cruel.

It was therapeutic.

Repeated ordinary safety.

Over months, the checking decreased.

May you like

Not because she forgot.

Because the world stopped requiring her to save me every morning.
