Chapter 15 - I make my own mistake

I wanted Vanessa out of Lily’s life immediately.

Understandable.

I went too far.

Before family court or protective-order processes had addressed contact formally, I sent Vanessa a message:

You will never see Lily again. If you come near her, I will make sure every employer, client, and person you know understands exactly what you are.

My lawyer called within six minutes.

“What did you send?”

I read it.

Silence.

Then:

“Why?”

“Because she poisoned my drink.”

“You do not get to threaten reputational destruction.”

“I told the truth.”

“You threatened future pressure.”

“She should be afraid.”

My lawyer’s voice changed.

“Graham.”

I stopped.

Claire’s memory again.

Do not become the kind of person who uses fear because the cause feels righteous.

I preserved the message.

Disclosed it.

Vanessa’s defense later used it to show hostility.

Fair.

I apologized only for the threat.

Not for the boundary.

Through counsel:

I should not have threatened to use professional pressure against you. Contact with Lily will be determined through lawful safety arrangements. Do not contact her directly while those are pending.

Better.

Vanessa had been my fiancée, not Lily’s legal parent.

She had no automatic custody right.

Still, there were belongings.

Goodbye.

Emotional history.

We handled them without theatrics.

Lily did not see Vanessa again.

Her choice later remained separate.
