Chapter 1

My Husband Put Me in the ICU and My Parents Refused to Help Until One Signature Cost Them Everything.

Vivienne Hale woke up in the ICU with a bandage wrapped around her head and bruises darkening across her face and neck.

The room was cold.

White.

Too bright.

Machines breathed softly beside her, and an IV line tugged at her arm every time she moved.

Behind the glass doors, Julian Hale fought against two hospital security officers, shouting her name like he still owned it.

Vivienne did not look afraid anymore.

She looked tired.

Wounded.

Clear.

Attorney Mara Chen stood beside the bed with a black tablet in her hands.

Nurse Evelyn Brooks remained near the glass doors, watching Julian carefully.

Vivienne lifted one trembling hand and pointed toward the tablet.

“Document every bruise. My husband did this.”

Julian lunged against the officers.

“She fell! She doesn’t know what she’s saying!”

Vivienne did not flinch.

Mara turned the tablet toward her, keeping the screen unreadable.

Vivienne pressed her fingertip against the signature field.

“I know exactly what I’m signing.”

A soft confirmation tone sounded.

Julian stopped shouting for half a second.

Only then did he realize Mara was not hospital administration.

She was Vivienne’s attorney.

Mara lowered the tablet.

“Your parents’ mortgage guarantee has been withdrawn.”

Vivienne closed her eyes once.

Not from regret.

From remembering.

Her mother saying, “You married him. Handle it yourself.”

Her father adding, “Don’t drag us into your drama.”

Vivienne opened her eyes again and looked directly at Julian through the glass.

“Good. Now open Julian’s company file.”

Julian surged forward.

The officers held him back.

And the monitor beside Vivienne continued its steady rhythm as everyone in the room understood the mortgage was only the first signature.
