Chapter 8

Mara opened another folder on the tablet.

No text visible to anyone but her.

Julian saw the motion and surged against the officers again.

“Stop her!”

The officers held him firmly without striking him.

Evelyn moved closer to the bed rail.

Vivienne remained upright, though pain moved across her face in a brief wave she could not hide.

Mara noticed.

“We can pause.”

Vivienne shook her head once.

“No.”

“Vivienne—”

“He will use every hour.”

Mara did not argue.

That was why Vivienne trusted her.

Mara understood people like Julian.

Delay was not neutral.

Delay was opportunity.

Delete a file.

Move money.

Call a board member.

Threaten an employee.

Change access.

Rewrite a meeting note.

Convert panic into strategy.

Vivienne had watched executives do it for years.

Now her husband’s company file sat one swipe away.

Julian yelled through the glass.

“You don’t have authority over Hale Meridian.”

Vivienne looked at him.

“My name is on the founding compliance structure.”

His face drained further.

He had forgotten.

Or assumed she had.

At the beginning, before the company became his favorite weapon, Julian had needed her credentials, her reputation, and her clean audit history.

He begged her to help structure the first filings.

He called it “our future.”

Then, once the company attracted investors, he called it “my business.”

But early documents remember what men later deny.

Mara tapped the folder.

Vivienne whispered, “Open it.”
