Chapter 9

The ICU monitor kept its steady rhythm.

That sound anchored Vivienne.

Beep.

Breathe.

Beep.

Decide.

Beep.

Survive.

Mara turned the tablet slightly away from Julian’s line of sight.

“What am I looking for first?”

Vivienne’s voice was weak but exact.

“Insurance schedules. Board authorizations. Vendor disbursements. Anything signed within the last thirty days.”

Julian stopped struggling.

That frightened him more than broad accusation.

She knew categories.

She knew timing.

She knew where to begin.

Evelyn watched his reaction and understood something without needing details.

Vivienne was not guessing.

Mara opened an unreadable list.

Her eyes moved quickly.

Then slowed.

“Vivienne.”

“I know.”

“You haven’t seen what I’m seeing.”

Vivienne looked at Julian.

“I know him.”

Julian’s hands flexed inside the officers’ grip.

“Those are privileged company materials.”

Mara answered without looking up.

“Some of these privileges may not apply the way you think they do.”

Cynthia from administration—who had been hovering nervously near the nurses’ station—took one step back.

Even hospital staff could feel the legal temperature drop.

Vivienne turned her eyes from Julian to the tablet.

The full file was not revealed.

No final takeover.

No balances.

No court decision.

No complete outcome.

Only the beginning.

But Julian’s fear had already confirmed what Mara’s silence suggested.

The company file mattered.

And Vivienne had opened it while he was still trapped behind glass.
