Chapter 5

Nurse Evelyn Brooks had seen fear wear many faces.
Some patients screamed.
Some went silent.
Some apologized for bleeding.
Some protected the person who hurt them because they had been taught survival meant making the room easier for everyone else.
Vivienne did none of those things.
She was weak, yes.
Her voice was thin.
Her breathing shallow.
But her eyes were alert.
Exact.
Every time Julian shouted through the glass, she watched him like she was recording him with her mind.
Evelyn respected that.
She also knew protection required more than sympathy.
So when Julian demanded entry, Evelyn placed herself near the door.
“She needs rest,” Julian said.
“She needs privacy,” Evelyn answered.
“I am her husband.”
“She is my patient.”
The same sentence stopped him every time.
Security arrived after Julian tried to push past the nurses’ station.
Now two officers held him by the arms while he shouted that Vivienne had fallen, that she was confused, that everyone was overreacting.
Vivienne looked at Mara.
“Have Evelyn witness the photographs.”
Mara nodded.
Evelyn stepped forward with clinical care and moral fury hidden beneath professionalism.
No readable records.
No public display.
Just documentation.
Bruise by bruise.
Mark by mark.
Vivienne whispered once, “I don’t want him touching the evidence.”
Evelyn answered, “He won’t.”
That was the first kindness that made Vivienne almost cry.
Not because it was soft.
Because it was firm.
For once, someone did not ask her to keep the peace.
May you like
Someone guarded the truth.
