Chapter 15 - The parenting evaluation

Dr. Melissa Arden conducted the final custody evaluation.
Not because either of us alleged abuse of Noah.
Because conflict was high and we could not agree on final schedule.
She interviewed:
Me.
Lucas.
Noah.
Mom.
Teachers.
Pediatrician.
Reviewed:
Police report.
GAL notes.
Corporate findings only insofar as credibility/coercion affected parenting.
She did not turn company misconduct into child abuse.
Lucas’s strengths:
Engaged father.
Consistent school involvement.
Coached baseball before separation.
Appropriate home.
No substance misuse.
No physical violence toward Noah.
No missed support.
Weaknesses:
Exposed Noah to adult divorce conflict.
Linked proposed parenting arrangement with financial settlement.
Threw belongings and photographs during confrontation.
Pattern of unilateral decision-making.
Need to improve emotional regulation.
My strengths:
Stable care.
School continuity.
Appropriate medical care.
Support network.
Willingness to preserve father-child relationship.
Weaknesses:
Anxiety.
Reliance on Barbara.
Tendency to interpret Lucas’s financial deception as evidence he may deceive in every parenting context.
There.
I hated that sentence.
It was true sometimes.
Then Noah.
“What schedule do you want?”
Dr. Arden did not ask that directly.
She asked about routines.
He liked:
Mom’s house near Grandma.
Dad’s pancakes.
Baseball.
His room at marital house.
He disliked:
Parents fighting.
“Mom checking my face when I come back.”
Ouch.
“Dad asking if Mom talks about company.”
Lucas had done that twice.
Also bad.
Then evaluator recommendation:
Joint legal custody with structured communication.
Primary residential base with me for school consistency.
Lucas:
Alternating weekends Friday to Monday.
One overnight each week.
Extended vacation.
Enough to remain substantial parent.
No need supervision.
No child questioning about other household.
No financial/corporate discussions around Noah.
Then future modification possible if conflict decreases.
I wanted sole legal custody.
Dr. Arden said:
“Your evidence supports safeguards, not erasure.”
May you like
I hated her.
Then later thanked her.
