Chapter 11 - EVELYN MERCER DOES NOT FORGIVE US

Evelyn asked to meet Gianna.
Not me.
Gianna agreed.
I waited outside.
Later she told me enough.
Evelyn began:
“Your family touched my son.”
Not:
Lucia.
Your family.
Gianna accepted it.
“I know.”
“I was bleeding.”
“I know.”
“I woke up and strangers told me they weren’t sure which baby was mine.”
Gianna cried.
“I’m sorry.”
Evelyn said:
“Stop apologizing like you did it.”
Then cried too.
Two mothers.
Both harmed.
Different ways.
Baby Mercer had been fed once in Gianna’s room.
Formula.
No medical issue.
Luca had remained in observation without a band for less than forty minutes.
He had been monitored.
No injury.
No missed medication.
No feeding error.
Physically, both babies were fine.
Emotionally, adults were not.
Evelyn asked the hospital for independent counseling support.
The hospital agreed.
Not hush money.
Documented patient-support services.
Then legal claims.
The Mercers retained counsel.
Against the hospital.
Against Lucia.
Potentially against Serena.
Not Gianna.
Not me personally.
Good.
The hospital preserved everything.
No private settlement that erased facts.
Then Evelyn told Gianna:
“I don’t ever want my son’s name used in your family story.”
Gianna agreed.
So after that, we stopped saying his name in extended-family conversations.
He was:
the other infant.
the Mercer baby.
A child with his own life.
May you like
Not the Bellante scandal’s supporting character.
That boundary mattered.
