Chapter 16 - I MAKE NOLAN PAY FOR SOMETHING HE DIDN’T DO

My second major mistake came six weeks later.

Nolan recommended that Gianna continue seeing the hospital’s pediatric orthopedist? No, twins healthy. Better: pediatrician.

He recommended the twins remain with the same hospital pediatric group because their records were complete and the doctors had followed them since birth.

I said no.

“Different hospital.”

Gianna asked:

“Why?”

“I don’t trust this one.”

Nolan said:

“The pediatricians did not cause the switch.”

“Same institution.”

“Different function.”

“I said no.”

Gianna looked at me.

Not frightened.

Angry.

“You said no to whom?”

I realized.

The twins’ care did not belong to me alone.

We were both parents.

I still pushed.

I had my office cancel appointments and schedule a private pediatric practice across town.

Without asking Gianna.

She found out through a reminder email.

The fight lasted forty minutes.

She said:

“Your mother moved my child because she thought she knew better than me. You are moving their doctors because you think you know better than me.”

I had no defense.

We restored the original appointments.

I apologized to the pediatric group.

Then Nolan.

I had also told two relatives:

“Nolan’s hospital almost lost my son.”

He heard.

His hospital.

Not his act.

He was the doctor who discovered the mismatch.

I called him.

“I said something unfair.”

“Yes.”

“I’m correcting it.”

“Good.”

No warm absolution.

I corrected the family record.

No evidence Dr. Nolan Pierce enabled or participated in the infant identification failure. He identified the mismatch and initiated security response.

Embarrassing.

Necessary.

My fear kept trying to turn into control.

I kept having to stop it after damage.

Eventually, I needed to stop earlier.
