Chapter 21 - NO FAMILY COUNCIL
Three older relatives asked me for a private meeting.
Their proposal:
Lucia pleads quietly.
Serena enters treatment.
Mercers compensated.
Hospital matter settled.
Family avoids public trial.
They spoke as though prosecutors worked for us.
I stopped them.
“You cannot settle a criminal case in my dining room.”
One uncle said:
“We can encourage cooperation.”
“Through lawyers.”
Another:
“You’re letting strangers define your mother.”
“No.”
“She’s still family.”
“Yes.”
“Then act like it.”
I looked at him.
“My sons were family when she moved one into another bassinet.”
Silence.
Then:
“The Mercer baby was not family at all, and she still used him.”
That ended the meeting.
I did not threaten anyone.
Did not ban them.
Did not call security.
I simply refused the old mechanism.
No private table deciding which harm counted.
Lucia had always believed family status increased authority.
