Chapter 20 - SERENA COOPERATES
Three months before trial, Serena changed course.
She accepted a cooperation agreement.
Not immunity.
She would plead to a reduced offense reflecting her knowing participation and attempted concealment.
She would testify truthfully against Lucia.
Why change?
Therapy.
Fear.
Self-interest.
All three.
No need pretend redemption arrived pure.
Her plea statement said:
“I knew my mother intended for me to take Luca without Gianna’s consent.”
Then:
“I did not know she intended to substitute another mother’s infant until I followed her into the nursery corridor.”
Then:
“When I saw her move the babies, I did not alert staff.”
Then:
“I carried her purse after she placed Luca’s identification band inside.”
Then:
“When Dr. Pierce discovered the mismatch, I attempted to retrieve the purse because I wanted to hide the bracelet.”
Clear.
No claim she was innocent.
She also admitted:
“I wanted Luca.”
That mattered.
Not just fear of Lucia.
Desire.
Her sentence would come later.
No contact with the twins remained.
She wrote Gianna a letter.
Gianna did not read it.
