Chapter 10 - SHE WAS PROTECTING HER PLACE, NOT MY EMPIRE

The DNA results came first.
Probability of paternity:
greater than 99.99 percent for both Silas and Jonah.
The twins were my biological sons.
No ambiguity.
No miracle.
No secret third child.
Two boys.
Five years old.
Mine.
Maeve cried.
I did not.
Not immediately.
I stared at the paper until the numbers became meaningless.
Then Silas asked:
“So yes?”
“Yes.”
Jonah:
“Both?”
“Yes.”
“Because twins?”
“Because test.”
He nodded.
Good.
Then the second part of the central secret.
Octavia’s private planning notes.
Not about the company’s survival.
About succession inside the family.
After my father died, Octavia had become the emotional center of every major family decision.
I was formal chairman.
She was informal matriarch.
If I married Maeve or acknowledged children outside the family circle, Octavia feared losing influence over me.
One note:
Maeve will become the only person Luciano listens to because she refuses the structure.
Another:
Children create permanent access.
Another:
If she has his sons, she has him.
That was the motive.
Not inheritance law.
Not criminal blackmail.
Emotional control.
Octavia believed a partner could leave.
A girlfriend could disappear.
But children create birthdays.
School decisions.
Medical emergencies.
Years of unavoidable contact.
If the twins were mine and I knew, Maeve would remain in my life.
Octavia did not want that.
Then the money.
The two-million-dollar structure served three purposes.
Support the boys enough to reduce the chance of public legal action.
Keep Maeve financially dependent on compliance.
Create a believable story for me that Maeve had chosen money over connection.
Octavia never intended to pay the full two million quickly.
The figure was large enough to sound final.
Large enough to make me angry at Maeve.
Large enough to make Maeve believe I had been paid or bought into silence.
Large enough to frighten both sides away from litigation.
Then the “empire.”
Octavia wrote:
If Luciano chooses Maeve over family structure after his father’s death, the board and trust become unstable because he follows emotion.
That was the empire she claimed to protect.
Not from Maeve taking shares.
From me becoming a man she could not direct.
The deception continued five years because it worked.
No scandal.
No Maeve.
No children.
No challenge to Octavia’s role.
Until the payments became inconvenient.
The family-service trust faced a liquidity review after a real-estate investment underperformed.
Octavia reduced Maeve’s payments first because she considered them discretionary.
Maeve came looking for me.
The system collided with reality.
The central secret was almost embarrassingly human.
My mother had not hidden heirs to save a criminal empire.
May you like
She hid two children because she feared losing control of her son.
Then used the empire as the excuse.
