Chapter 7 - I PUNISH THE WRONG PEOPLE
My mistake began with the family reserve account.
The agreement payments had been processed through Ferretti Family Services Trust.
I saw Octavia’s name as trustee.
I ordered our bank:
“Freeze every disbursement.”
The bank complied on accounts where I had authority or co-trustee rights.
For eighteen hours.
Too broad.
The trust paid more than Maeve.
It funded:
Medical reimbursements for two elderly relatives.
Tuition payments.
A scholarship program.
One disabled cousin’s home-care contribution.
Employee hardship grants.
My attempt to stop Octavia from moving money stopped money to people who had done nothing.
Caroline called me at 7:10 the next morning.
“You froze a home-health payment.”
“I froze Mother.”
“No. You froze a trust.”
“She controls it.”
“Not every beneficiary is her.”
I looked at the report.
Damn.
We restored ordinary beneficiary payments.
Then sought targeted restrictions on Octavia’s discretionary authority through trustees and court process.
I personally covered late fees caused by the hold.
No one missed medical care, but one home-health agency threatened suspension before the payment was corrected.
That was enough.
I sent a written apology to affected beneficiaries.
No excuse.
Then the board.
Two independent trustees temporarily assumed approval authority for unusual transfers.
Good.
A system correcting my temper.
Octavia’s attorney later used the freeze as evidence that I responded to family conflict with financial force.
Accurate.
