Chapter 1

The Scans Told Everything.
My father’s hand closed around my wrist before the doctor finished speaking.
Not gently.
Not like a parent afraid for his child.
Like a man trying to remove evidence from a room.
I was sixteen years old, lying upright in an emergency room bed with an oxygen mask over my face, a hospital blanket pulled to my chest, and medical tape on my arm.
The monitor beside me beeped softly.
Cold fluorescent light made everything look too clean.
Too white.
Too honest.
My father leaned over the bed in his dark sweater, his face tight with the kind of anger he only showed at home.
“This stays in the family,” he said.
“We’ll handle her at home.”
My mother stood behind him with her purse clutched against her stomach.
She would not look at me.
My older sister Brittany stood near the wall, arms crossed, looking bored in the practiced way people look when they are terrified of knowing too much.
Dr. Grant walked to the light board without answering my father.
She lifted the scan film.
Then snapped it into place.
The room went still.
Even the nurses near the doorway stopped moving.
The glowing image lit her face in blue-white light.
Dr. Grant’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
“These fractures didn’t happen today.”
My father’s grip tightened.
My heart started racing beneath the mask.
He stepped toward the doctor.
“She’s clumsy.”
His jaw flexed.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Officer Nolan moved before he could take another step.
She was a uniformed police officer with calm eyes and one hand already raised.
She placed her palm against my father’s chest and stopped him cold.
“Sir, step away from the bed.”
My father looked shocked.
Not because he had been stopped.
Because it happened in front of witnesses.
Security closed the ER door behind him.
A nurse quietly locked the hallway access.
My father turned his head and finally understood.
The room was no longer his.
I pulled my hand back under the blanket, shaking so hard the oxygen mask fogged with each breath.
Then I looked past Officer Nolan at Dr. Grant.
My voice came out small.
But it came out.
“Please…”
May you like
“Don’t let them take me home.”
