Chapter 6
Brittany broke after my father was taken into the hallway.
Not arrested yet.
Just separated.
That distinction mattered to adults.
To me, it meant I could breathe.
My mother stayed in the corner, pale and silent.
Brittany slid down the wall near the cabinets and covered her face.
“I’m sorry.”
She said it once.
Then again.
Then again until Nurse Kelly knelt beside her.
“Brittany,” Dr. Grant said softly.
“Do you feel safe at home?”
My sister looked at the floor.
She was nineteen.
Three years older than me.
Old enough to leave.
Young enough to still be trapped by the idea that leaving me behind would make her a coward.
“I’m in community college,” she said.
“I work nights.”
That was not an answer.
It was the story she used to survive.
Officer Nolan stepped back into the room.
“Brittany, has your father hurt you?”
My sister shook her head.
Then stopped.
Then nodded.
Then whispered, “Not like Emily.”
My mother made a small wounded sound.
As if Brittany’s honesty had attacked her.
Brittany looked at her.
“Mom, stop.”
The room froze.
I had never heard Brittany speak to her like that.
My mother’s mouth opened.
Brittany stood, shaking.
“You always say he doesn’t mean it.”
“You always say he’s stressed.”
“You always say Emily has to stop provoking him.”
My mother whispered, “I was trying to keep this family together.”
Brittany laughed through tears.
“No.”
“You were trying to keep him calm.”
That sentence cut through years of fog.
My mother sat slowly into the chair beside the wall.
For the first time, she looked less like a victim and more like someone who had made choices.
Officer Nolan asked Brittany if she would give a statement.
Brittany looked at me.
I did not tell her what to do.
I was tired of people making survival decisions for someone else.
Brittany wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“Yes.”
My mother whispered, “Brittany.”
My sister did not look at her.
“Yes,” she repeated.
