Chapter 7

My father was arrested at 11:43 p.m.

I did not see it happen.

Officer Nolan asked if I wanted the curtain closed.

I said yes.

For once, an adult gave me a choice and honored it.

So I heard only pieces.

His voice low at first.

Then sharp.

Then disbelieving.

“You can’t do this.”

“I am her father.”

“She lies.”

“My wife will tell you.”

Then Officer Nolan’s voice.

Calm.

Firm.

Unmoved.

“Martin Carter, you are under arrest.”

My mother made a sound in the hallway.

Not grief.

Fear.

The kind of fear that asks, What happens to me now?

I hated myself for thinking that.

Then I realized I did not hate myself.

I was just finally tired of protecting her from the truth of her own silence.

Dr. Grant stayed with me until the hallway quieted.

She checked the monitor.

Then my oxygen.

Then my blanket.

Small things.

Normal things.

Things my body did not know how to trust yet.

“What happens now?” I asked.

She pulled a chair beside the bed.

“Tonight, you stay here.”

“And after?”

“Child protective services will be contacted.”

“Officer Nolan will help.”

“We will document everything.”

“And you will not be sent home with him.”

The words entered slowly.

Not sent home.

With him.

I turned my face away and cried into the mask.

Dr. Grant did not tell me to calm down.

She did not say it was over.

Because it was not.

Safety was not the same thing as healing.

But it was a beginning.

Brittany gave her statement in another room.

My mother refused at first.

Then asked for an attorney.

Officer Nolan allowed it.

Rights did not disappear just because I was angry.

That was hard to accept.

But Dr. Grant told me later, “A real system has rules even when people are guilty.”

I thought about our house.

My father had rules too.

But his rules only protected himself.
