Chapter 4

When the scans came back, Dr. Grant did not call my father first.

She called Officer Nolan.

That was when my father stopped pretending to be patient.

He paced near the bed.

He checked his phone.

He told my mother this hospital was incompetent.

He told Brittany to stop shaking.

He told me to sit up straighter because I looked weak.

I was in a hospital bed with an oxygen mask.

He still found a way to judge posture.

My mother whispered, “Martin, please.”

He turned on her.

“What?”

She looked down.

“Nothing.”

That was her whole marriage in one word.

Nothing.

Brittany’s phone buzzed.

She checked it, then shoved it in her pocket.

My father noticed.

“Who are you texting?”

“No one.”

“Give it to me.”

Brittany froze.

Officer Nolan looked up.

My father stopped.

That was new.

At home, he would have taken the phone.

In the ER, he remembered the uniform.

Dr. Grant entered holding the films.

Her face had changed.

Not into shock.

Into certainty.

Nurse Kelly followed.

Security stood outside the room now.

My father looked at the doorway.

“Why is he there?”

Officer Nolan said, “For everyone’s safety.”

“My daughter is safe with me.”

No one answered.

That silence made him angrier.

Dr. Grant snapped the X-ray onto the light board.

The white lines glowed.

I did not understand what I was seeing.

My father did.

Or at least, he understood enough.

His mouth tightened.

“These fractures didn’t happen today,” Dr. Grant said.

The monitor beside me beeped faster.

Brittany covered her mouth.

My mother closed her eyes.

My father gave a small laugh.

“She fell off her bike.”

Dr. Grant placed another scan beside the first.

“And this?”

“Gymnastics.”

“Emily’s chart says she has never been in gymnastics.”

“She used to be active.”

Dr. Grant added a third image.

Her voice did not rise.

“That injury is older.”

My father’s face hardened.

“She’s clumsy.”

“You’re making a mistake.”

Officer Nolan stepped between him and my bed before he could move closer.

The room suddenly made sense to everyone.

To my mother.

To Brittany.

To me.

The scans were not asking for permission.

They were speaking.
