Chapter 1

My Sister Shoved Me Into a Fountain at Her Wedding and Called Me Poor—Then She Learned I Owned the Estate.
The water crashed over Grace Ashford’s head in front of two hundred wedding guests.
She was on her knees inside the stone fountain, soaked from her dark-brown hair to the hem of her faded blue vintage dress.
Elise Ashford, glittering in a white gown, tiara, veil, and diamonds, stood above her with the empty clear container in her hand.
“She reeks of poverty.”
Then Elise laughed louder.
“Let’s wash off the smell.”
The courtyard erupted in cruel laughter.
Richard Ashford clapped.
Margaret Ashford raised her champagne glass, smiling like her oldest daughter’s humiliation was part of the entertainment.
Grace pressed both palms against the fountain ledge and forced herself upright.
Water streamed down her face.
Margaret called out, “Relax, Grace. It’s just a joke.”
Grace looked directly at her mother.
No screaming.
No pleading.
No tears left for them.
She stepped out of the fountain and walked across the marble courtyard, leaving wet footprints behind her.
A server tried to offer a towel.
Grace raised one hand and kept walking.
She took the microphone from the stunned bandleader.
Then she turned toward Elise.
“You’re right.”
Elise’s smile faltered.
Grace looked toward Daniel Mercer, the attorney standing beside the stage with a black leather folder.
“Now let’s see who laughs last.”
Daniel placed the closed folder on the stage table.
The guests went silent.
Elise reached for it, but Daniel covered it with one firm hand.
Grace stood soaked, calm, and unbroken.
