Chapter 9

Guests began lowering their phones.

Not out of respect.

Out of self-preservation.

A cruel joke is easy to record when everyone believes the victim is powerless.

It becomes dangerous when an attorney stands beside her with sealed documents.

Grace looked across the courtyard.

Some guests looked ashamed.

Some curious.

Some delighted by scandal.

Grace no longer cared which was which.

Elise whispered, “What did you do?”

Grace held the microphone closer.

“I let you host your wedding.”

Elise stared.

The sentence was not a complete legal reveal.

But it was enough.

Margaret’s hand shook around her champagne glass.

Richard stepped toward Grace, voice low.

“Don’t do this here.”

Grace looked at him.

“You clapped here.”

He stopped.

That sentence was smaller than what he deserved.

It still landed.

Daniel kept the folder partially closed, the embossed document edge visible but unreadable.

No ownership clause was read.

No wedding was canceled on-screen.

No family downfall completed.

Only the beginning.

Elise looked around at the estate courtyard—the fountain, the flowers, the decorations, the guests—and saw it differently.

Not as her stage.

As something she might not control.

Grace removed the soaked outer shawl from her shoulders and squared her posture.

Water still dripped from her hair.

But she no longer looked humiliated.

She looked like the only person present who knew where the ground really stood.
