Chapter 7

The microphone felt cold in Grace’s wet hand.
The guests stared.
Elise stood near the fountain, still smiling but less certain now.
Margaret’s champagne glass hovered near her lips.
Richard stopped clapping.
Grace looked at the crowd, then at her family.
Her voice came out steady.
“You’re right.”
Elise blinked.
The crowd shifted.
Grace let the silence stretch.
“You all came here today to celebrate my sister.”
Elise lifted her chin, trying to reclaim the moment.
Grace turned toward her.
“And you wanted everyone to know exactly what you thought I was.”
Elise forced a laugh.
“Oh, please. Don’t ruin my wedding because you can’t take a joke.”
Grace ignored that and looked toward Daniel.
“Now let’s see who laughs last.”
Daniel moved at once.
He stepped forward and placed the closed black leather folder on the stage table.
The sound was soft.
Still, it seemed to strike the courtyard harder than the splash had.
Elise’s eyes moved to the folder.
Margaret lowered her glass.
Richard’s expression tightened.
Daniel said nothing.
That restraint frightened them.
If he had shouted, they could dismiss him.
If he had waved papers, they could accuse him of theatrics.
But he only placed the folder down and waited beside Grace.
Professional.
Calm.
Certain.
