Chapter 2

Grace had not wanted to attend the wedding.
She knew exactly what Elise had planned.
Not the fountain.
Not the water.
Not that level of public cruelty.
But something.
Elise never invited Grace without a reason.
Their mother, Margaret, called two weeks earlier with a voice too sweet to trust.
“Your sister wants the whole family together.”
Grace nearly laughed.
“Elise wants photographs.”
Margaret ignored that.
“It would look strange if you weren’t there.”
There it was.
Not love.
Optics.
Grace almost refused.
Then Daniel Mercer called.
“The estate event contract has been finalized,” he said. “You should be present.”
Grace looked at the invitation on her kitchen table.
Embossed gold lettering.
Newport estate.
Ocean views.
Luxury reception.
Her sister’s name printed beside a man Grace had met only once.
“Elise doesn’t know?” Grace asked.
“No.”
“My parents?”
“No.”
Grace closed her eyes.
For years, her family had called her poor because she refused to live on money she had not earned.
They mocked her old car.
Her thrifted dresses.
Her rented apartment.
They did not know she had quietly taken control of the estate after their grandmother’s trust was restored.
They did not know Daniel had spent months unwinding the family’s lies.
They did not know Elise’s dream wedding venue had been approved by Grace.
Grace attended because Daniel said the documents were ready.
She wore the faded blue dress because she knew they expected to mock it.
She did not expect to be thrown into the fountain.

But she was ready for the room to reveal itself.
