Gloria’s account of the closet evolved too.
Version one:
Twenty-minute time-out.
Version two:
An hour.
Version three:
She lost track because she was getting ready for dinner.
Version four:
She believed Walt had released Lizzy before Gloria left.
Walt’s version:
He believed Gloria released her.
Both could not be comfortably true without one shared fact:
Neither checked.
Restaurant records showed Gloria left the house at 8:07.
A rideshare receipt showed she returned at 12:38.
Why a rideshare?
Wine at dinner.
Responsible decision in one part of the night.
Walt watched baseball downstairs.
Fell asleep around ten.
He told investigators:
“I heard Lizzy crying upstairs earlier.”
“Did you check?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Gloria was handling discipline.”
“Did you know the door was latched?”
He paused.
“I knew she sometimes used that room.”
There.
“Did you approve?”
“I told her I didn’t like it.”
“Did you stop it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Gloria was her guardian.”
The investigator reportedly asked:
“You were her grandfather.”
That line was not in a movie.
