Chapter 5

The day Ethan locked Linda outside began quietly.

Most cruel days do.

I was in the garage repairing a neighbor’s cabinet hinge.

Linda said she was walking to the small market for bread and milk.

I asked if she wanted me to drive her.

She smiled.

“It’s three blocks, Tom.”

“And your heart medication?”

“I’ll pick it up on the way back.”

She kissed my cheek and left.

Twenty minutes later, I heard shouting from inside the house.

Ethan.

Then Ashley.

Not angry shouting.

Excited shouting.

The kind people use when they think something is finally going their way.

I walked from the garage to the back hallway and saw them in the kitchen with papers spread across the island.

Renovation plans.

Contractor estimates.

A printed layout with walls removed.

Our pantry doorframe was marked for demolition.

The one with Ethan’s childhood heights.

I said, “What is this?”

Ashley jumped.

Ethan did not.

“Dad, we were going to talk to you.”

“Were you?”

He looked at the plans.

“This house needs updates.”

“No.”

“You haven’t even heard the full plan.”

“I heard enough.”

Ashley folded her arms.

“Tom, you can’t expect us to live in a house that functions like it’s 1992.”

I looked at her.

“You are free not to live here.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“See? This is what I mean.”

“What?”

“You act like we’re guests.”

“You are.”

He stepped closer.

“I am your son.”

“Yes.”

“You really want to treat me like a tenant?”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“Tenants pay.”

Ashley gasped like I had cursed at dinner.

Ethan’s eyes went cold.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then smiled strangely.

“Fine.”

I did not know then that he had already changed the gate code again.

I did not know Linda would come home ten minutes later, bag in hand, medication inside, and find herself locked out.

I did not know Ethan would stand by the front door and tell his mother the house belonged to him now.

But I knew something had crossed in his face.

A decision.

Not sudden.

Revealed.

By the time Linda called my name from outside, Ethan had mistaken my patience for surrender.

That was his last mistake.
