Chapter 8

Police came because Ethan called them.

That was the strangest part.

He said we were harassing him.

He said we were threatening to make him homeless.

He said we had “suddenly turned on him.”

Two officers arrived thirty minutes later.

By then, Marianne had emailed the first documents.

I printed them in the den while Ashley cried quietly at the kitchen table and Ethan paced like a trapped animal.

The officers listened to everyone.

Then asked one simple question.

“Who owns the property?”

I handed over the deed.

The lead officer read it.

Then looked at Ethan.

“Sir, you do not appear to be an owner.”

Ethan pointed at me.

“He’s my father.”

The officer stayed neutral.

“That does not create ownership.”

Ashley covered her face.

Linda sat on the couch with her medication bottle in her hand.

The second officer noticed.

“Ma’am, were you locked out?”

Linda looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

Then back at the officer.

“Yes.”

The word was small.

But it changed the room.

The officer asked, “Did you have access to your medication while locked out?”

“It was in my grocery bag.”

“Were you prevented from entering?”

Linda swallowed.

“Yes.”

Ethan snapped, “I wasn’t preventing her. I changed the code.”

The officer looked at him.

“Did you give her the new code?”

Ethan said nothing.

Ashley whispered, “Ethan.”

The officer wrote something down.

Ethan finally understood that calling police had not made him look like a homeowner.

It made him look like what he was.

A grown man who locked his elderly mother outside her own house.

The officers explained that because Ethan and Ashley had been living there, formal eviction would proceed through court.

But they also documented the access issue.

Medication.

Age.

Control of entry.

Possible elder abuse referral.

At those words, Ethan exploded.

“Elder abuse? Are you kidding me?”

The officer’s face hardened.

“Lower your voice.”

Ethan lowered it.

For once.

After the officers left, the house felt exhausted.

Ashley stood in the doorway of the guest room.

“Tom, can we have a few days?”

Marianne’s email came through at that exact moment.

Notice prepared.

Linda looked at me.

I looked at her.

This decision belonged to both of us.

She took a slow breath.

“One night.”

Ashley sagged with relief.

Linda continued.

May you like

“To pack.”
