Chapter 6

After I opened the gate, Ethan tried to laugh.

It sounded weak.

“Dad, you’re being dramatic.”

I walked past him with Linda beside me.

Ashley backed up into the entryway.

The house smelled like fresh coffee and betrayal.

Linda’s hands were still trembling, so I placed her grocery bag on the kitchen counter myself.

Bread.

Milk.

Heart medication.

A simple list.

A simple errand.

They had turned it into humiliation.

I looked at Ethan.

“You locked your mother outside with her medication in the bag.”

He rolled his eyes.

“She had her phone.”

“Not the code.”

“She was being stubborn.”

Linda’s face crumpled.

That word did it.

Not Mom.

Not elderly.

Not scared.

Stubborn.

As if wanting to enter her own home was a personality flaw.

I opened my leather folder.

Ethan glanced at it.

Ashley looked nervous.

Good.

I laid the deed on the counter first.

Then the trust document.

Then the amendment.

Ethan snorted.

“What is this supposed to prove?”

I tapped the first page.

“This proves the house is mine and your mother’s.”

He crossed his arms.

“For now.”

I tapped the second.

“This proves Linda has lifetime rights here that no one can remove.”

Ashley leaned closer.

Her face paled.

I tapped the third.

“This proves you are no longer guaranteed anything from the trust.”

The kitchen went silent.

Ethan stared at me.

“What did you say?”

I looked at my son.

“I removed you.”

His mouth opened.

Ashley whispered, “Ethan.”

He pointed at the papers.

“You can’t do that.”

“I did.”

“I’m your only child.”

“And she is my wife.”

That sentence landed harder than I expected.

Linda looked at me.

Her eyes filled.

Maybe she had needed to hear it as much as Ethan did.

Ethan’s face twisted.

“So that’s it? You choose her?”

I stared at him.

For a second, I saw the boy with frosting on his face at his eighth birthday.

Then I saw the man who locked his mother outside a metal gate.

“Yes.”

“If you make me choose between your entitlement and her safety, I choose her every time.”

Ashley stepped back from the counter.

Her measuring tape slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

That small sound ended something.

Not the fight.

The illusion.
