Chapter 7

Ethan did what weak men do when facts corner them.

He got louder.

“You’re making a mistake.”

I closed the folder.

“No.”

“You’re old.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t understand what this house is worth.”

That one almost made me smile.

“I understand exactly what it is worth.”

“No, you don’t.”

He pointed toward the living room.

“You see old shelves and Mom’s flowers and some stupid pantry marks.”

Linda flinched.

My voice dropped.

“Careful.”

But Ethan was past careful.

“I see equity.”

Ashley reached for his arm.

“Ethan, stop.”

He shook her off.

“This place could set us up.”

“There it is,” I said.

He blinked.

“What?”

“The truth.”

He tried to recover.

“I mean all of us.”

“No, you don’t.”

I stepped closer.

“You locked your mother outside because she stood between you and a house you did not buy.”

Ethan’s mouth tightened.

“She keeps holding you back.”

Linda whispered, “From what?”

His silence answered.

From selling.

Renovating.

Borrowing.

Using.

Turning our home into their financial escape.

I picked up my phone.

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Who are you calling now?”

“My attorney.”

His smile disappeared.

Ashley said quickly, “Tom, maybe we should all calm down.”

“We are calm.”

My thumb pressed Marianne’s number.

Ethan moved toward me.

Not a full lunge.

Not an attack.

Enough.

I lifted one hand.

“Do not.”

Something in my voice stopped him.

At seventy, I was not stronger than my son.

But strength is not only muscle.

Sometimes it is knowing exactly where you stand.

Marianne answered.

“Tom?”

“Remove Ethan from the trust.”

A pause.

“Understood.”

“File the eviction tonight.”

Ethan’s face went white.

“Eviction?”

Marianne said, “I’ll begin notice immediately.”

“Also document elder intimidation and access interference.”

Ashley sat down slowly.

Ethan looked at Linda as if she might save him.

She did not.

For forty-four years, Linda had saved everyone.

Dinner.

Birthdays.

Arguments.

Bills.

Feelings.

That night, she stood quietly beside me and let the consequences arrive.

Ethan whispered, “Mom?”

Linda’s voice shook, but she did not look away.

“You left me outside.”
