Chapter 12 - the account opened before naomi arrived
The account was held at a private digital bank.
Its owner appeared to be Naomi Reed.
The address matched her apartment.
The birth date matched.
The Social Security number matched.
Even the verification video showed a woman with Naomi’s face turning toward the camera.
Naomi had never opened it.
Forensic analysts determined the video was created from photographs found in her staffing application.
Rose’s team had used identity-synthesis software to build a fraudulent verification clip.
The account received transfers from Red Orchid Services, Roselyn Consulting, and the Bellamy Foundation.
Then most of the money moved elsewhere.
A remaining balance of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars stayed untouched.
It looked like Naomi’s profit from the scheme.
Rose’s attorneys immediately argued that Naomi was the hidden financial partner who turned on Rose after a personal conflict.
The timeline made the lie dangerous.
The account had been created ten days before Naomi’s first day at the mansion.
That proved premeditation.
It did not, by itself, prove Rose created it.
The registration used an internet connection from the staffing agency.
The agency owner denied knowledge.
Investigators seized the office computer and found remote-access software installed by Rose’s assistant.
The assistant had already admitted mailing the threat photograph. Faced with identity-theft evidence, she began cooperating.
Rose instructed her to create the account, prepare Naomi’s false contract, and route enough money through it to make future blame convincing.
“Why Naomi?” prosecutors asked.
“Rose said she needed someone intelligent enough to find the fraud and poor enough that people would believe she took the money.”
The answer struck Naomi with cold precision.
Rose had not underestimated her.
She had selected her competence as part of the trap.
The assistant said the untouched balance was intentional.
“If Naomi reported Rose, the account would be revealed. Rose believed the money would make every accusation look like revenge between partners.”
“Why leave so much?”
“Because a small amount could look accidental. A large amount changes how people see someone.”
Naomi understood.
Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars did not merely imply theft.
It invited envy.
People would want the accusation to be true because the amount made the story exciting.
The account was frozen and marked as fraudulent.
Clearing Naomi’s identity would take months.
Her credit records showed inquiries she never authorized. Tax agencies requested explanations. The staffing company refused to reinstate her until the matter was resolved.
Rose’s plan continued hurting her even while Rose remained confined.
Adrian offered his legal team.
Naomi accepted only after the foundation agreed to pay attorneys for every former employee whose identity had been misused.
“I will not become the special case because I stood in the right room when you finally looked,” she said.
The board approved the wider program.
Rose’s assistant surrendered a backup drive.
It contained voice notes from Rose.
In one, she said:
Naomi will either stay quiet or expose the fraud. Both outcomes work. Silence protects the transfers. Exposure activates the account in her name.
The central scheme was complete.
Rose created harm.
She anticipated resistance.
She turned resistance into evidence against the person resisting.
The criminal case strengthened enough for prosecutors to seek detention.
At the bond hearing, Rose’s attorney argued she posed no physical danger.
Naomi’s attorney presented the threat to her mother, the witness calls, and the forged account.
The judge revoked Rose’s bond.
As officers approached, Rose looked across the courtroom toward Naomi.
“You think prison changes who people believe?”
Naomi answered softly.
“No. The records do.”
Rose was taken into custody.
Adrian stood several rows behind Naomi.
He did not approach until she turned toward him.
“It’s over,” he said.
“The account is still in my name.”
“We will clear it.”
“The former employees are still rebuilding.”
“Yes.”
“Then it is not over.”
He nodded.
That evening, Naomi received confirmation that the fraudulent funds had been secured.
A second message arrived immediately afterward.
It came from an automated email account created by Rose.
The subject line read:
WHEN ADRIAN FINALLY CHOOSES YOU.
Inside was a short video recorded in the mansion library.
Adrian sat beside Rose, signing a stack of documents.
Rose asked:
“If an employee becomes inconvenient, do I have your authority to remove her?”
Adrian answered without looking up:
“Yes. Handle it.”
