Chapter 6 - the woman chosen to take the blame
Rose’s plan for Naomi was more detailed than anyone expected.
The fraud folder contained a fabricated employment history showing that Naomi had worked as an outside consultant for the foundation before entering the mansion.
False invoices carried her name.
A forged contract gave her authority to approve relocation payments.
Emails had been drafted from an account resembling hers by one letter.
The final stage required Naomi to discover enough of the fraud to appear knowledgeable.
Then Rose would provoke her into violence, accuse her of theft, and claim the financial records proved motive.
The kick in the foyer had arrived exactly when Rose needed it.
“She expected me to fight back,” Naomi said.
Grace nodded.
“She studied the previous employees. Most became emotional after repeated humiliation. She seems to have believed you would eventually respond.”
“Why choose someone with accounting experience?”
“Because a bookkeeper makes a convincing financial criminal.”
Adrian stood near the window, silent.
Naomi looked at him.
“What did Rose know about my personal finances?”
Grace opened another file.
Everything.
Rose had purchased a private background report before approving Naomi’s application. It included her student debt, her mother’s medical expenses, and a late rent payment from the previous winter.
The fabricated narrative claimed Naomi stole because she was desperate.
Naomi felt exposed in a way the slap had not caused.
Her ordinary struggles had been converted into criminal motive.
Adrian spoke carefully.
“She used a household staffing company I have trusted for years.”
“The agency did not choose me,” Naomi said. “She did.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Rose’s attorney argued that the files could have been created by anyone with access to her devices.
The audit logs showed her personal biometric authorization.
She could no longer plausibly deny involvement, so her defense shifted.
She claimed Naomi discovered the fraud, demanded money, and attacked when Rose refused.
The complete foyer video disproved part of the story.
The prepared files disproved the rest.
Still, Rose found another weapon.
She accused Adrian of having an affair with Naomi.
No evidence supported it.
The allegation did not need evidence to become gossip.
Photographs of Adrian and Naomi leaving the audit office appeared online. Headlines asked whether the billionaire had replaced his young wife with the maid who assaulted her.
Naomi refused every interview.
Adrian wanted to sue.
Grace advised patience.
“Rose wants the fraud case buried beneath a marriage scandal.”
Naomi agreed.
“Do not make me the reason you divorce her.”
Adrian looked surprised.
“I have not mentioned divorce.”
“You have not needed to.”
He had stopped wearing his wedding ring.
Naomi continued.
“You should leave a marriage because of what your wife did, not because another woman made you feel understood.”
Adrian looked away.
She had recognized an emotional danger he had not yet named.
The story did not need a rescue romance.
Naomi had spent weeks reclaiming control over her own life. She would not become an explanation for a powerful man’s choices.
Adrian filed for separation based on documented fraud and abuse. His legal statement mentioned Naomi only as an employee and witness.
Rose responded by demanding a substantial marital settlement and temporary access to the mansion.
Her attorneys produced a postnuptial agreement carrying Adrian’s signature. It granted Rose twenty-five million dollars if he expelled her from the marital residence without proof of serious misconduct.
Adrian remembered signing a household insurance renewal on the same date.
He had not read the complete packet.
Naomi stared at him when he admitted it.
“You signed without reading.”
“Yes.”
“The same way you approved foundation expenses.”
“Yes.”
The pattern was larger than Rose.
She committed the crimes.
Adrian had repeatedly supplied access through trust without verification.
The court suspended the agreement pending forensic review.
Meanwhile, Clara and six other former employees filed a joint civil claim. Rose’s attempts to silence them had failed.
The pressure tightened.
Then Naomi received an envelope at her apartment.
Inside was a photograph of her mother leaving a medical clinic.
Across the back, Rose had written:
Withdraw your statement, or her bills become public.
Rose knew Naomi’s mother had been treated through a charitable program connected to the Bellamy Foundation.
