Chapter 1

Parents Throw Out Their Pregnant Daughter Before She Returns Ten Years Later With Her Son and a Photograph That Shatters Their Past.
Thomas opened the black front door and forgot how to breathe.
His daughter stood on the porch in a formal black U.S. Army dress uniform, medals catching the afternoon sunlight, dark hair falling neatly over one shoulder.
Ten years had passed since he last saw her.
Ten years since he told her she had disgraced the family.
Ten years since he watched Beatrice place Chloe’s suitcase on that same porch and close the door on their pregnant nineteen-year-old daughter.
Now Chloe Miller stood there upright and silent.
Beside her was a little boy in a child-sized military-style uniform, peaked cap tilted slightly over his light-brown hair.
He held Chloe’s hand with one hand.
In the other, he held a faded photograph.
Beatrice came up behind Thomas, saw Chloe, and covered her mouth.
The old porch lantern hung between them.
The neighboring houses were quiet.
The bright Albany sunlight made the moment feel too clear to deny.
Thomas whispered, “Chloe?”
Chloe did not step inside.
She looked at him the way a soldier looks at a battlefield she has already survived.
“I came back to tell you the truth.”
Her voice was calm.
That frightened Beatrice more than anger would have.
Chloe reached into the inside pocket of her uniform jacket and removed the worn photograph.
Leo tightened his grip around her hand.
Beatrice’s eyes moved to the child.
Her face changed.
“Who is that little boy?”
Chloe looked down at her son, then back at the parents who had erased her before they ever learned what they had done.
“My son—and this man tried to save us.”
She placed the photograph into Thomas’s open hand.
He looked down.
A young engineer in a construction helmet smiled beside a much younger Thomas outside an industrial factory.
Thomas’s fingers began trembling.
Beatrice stepped backward against the doorframe.
Leo gently took the photograph and studied the man’s face.
Then he looked up at Chloe with complete innocence.
“Mom… is that my dad?”
Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.
Thomas stared at the boy.
