Chapter 9

The yellow folder changed the air.

Chloe did not open it.

She did not need to.

Thomas recognized the color.

Beatrice recognized his reaction.

Leo noticed both.

That was the danger of secrets around children.

Adults think children miss the details.

They do not.

They gather them quietly and build questions later.

Thomas’s voice became harsh.

“Put that away.”

Chloe held his gaze.

“No.”

“You have no idea what is in there.”

“I know enough.”

“Who gave it to you?”

“Someone braver than you.”

The words struck him.

Beatrice whispered, “Thomas.”

He looked at her with sudden anger.

“Don’t.”

Chloe watched them carefully.

There was more between her parents than she had understood as a teenager.

Fear did not sit only in Thomas.

It lived in Beatrice too.

But Beatrice’s fear looked different.

Not guilt alone.

Recognition.

Maybe remorse.

Maybe complicity.

Maybe something worse.

Leo looked down at the photograph again.

“The man tried to save you?”

Chloe swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And me?”

Her eyes filled.

“In a way.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Beatrice made a broken sound.

Chloe did not explain.

Not the factory.

Not the incident.

Not the night she was forced out.

Not the way her pregnancy had threatened to connect names that powerful people had spent years separating.

The full truth could wait.

This moment belonged to Leo’s question.

The one every child deserves to ask without being punished.

“Was he nice?” Leo asked.

Chloe smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

Thomas whispered, “He was reckless.”

Chloe looked at him.

“No.”

“He was brave.”

Leo stared at the photograph like it had become a window.

Then he turned back toward the grandparents who looked terrified of a dead man’s face.
