Chapter 2

Ten years earlier, Chloe had stood on the same porch with one suitcase and one hand over her stomach.

She was nineteen.

Pregnant.

Terrified.

Still hoping her parents would become parents again before the door closed.

Beatrice had cried, but her tears did not save Chloe.

Thomas had not cried at all.

He had stood in the hallway with his arms folded and said, “You made your choice.”

Chloe remembered the weight of those words more than the cold.

She remembered her mother saying, “People will talk.”

She remembered asking, “What about me?”

No one answered that.

They asked for the father’s name.

Chloe gave them only part of the truth because the full truth was tangled in fear, death, documents, and a factory accident no one in Albany wanted discussed.

Thomas heard the name she almost said and went pale.

That was the first crack in the night.

Then he became furious.

“Do not bring that into this house.”

Chloe had not understood then.

Not fully.

She only knew her father recognized something he should not have recognized.

Beatrice looked at Thomas instead of Chloe.

That hurt most.

Not that her mother did not know what to say.

That her mother was waiting for Thomas to decide whether compassion was allowed.

By midnight, Chloe’s suitcase was outside.

By morning, her key no longer worked.

For years, she told Leo a gentle version.

Grandma and Grandpa weren’t ready.

Grandma and Grandpa made a mistake.

Grandma and Grandpa were scared.

But children grow, and soft stories begin tearing at the edges.

Leo started asking why there were no baby pictures with grandparents.

Why they never visited Albany.

Why Mom kept one old envelope locked in her cedar box.

Chloe always said, “Someday.”

Someday came when she found the photograph.
