Chapter 7

Thomas tried to fold the photograph.
That was instinct.
Old habit.
Destroy the shape before anyone else sees it.
Chloe moved before he could.
“Don’t.”
Her voice was not loud.
It carried command anyway.
Thomas froze.
Leo’s eyes moved between them.
Beatrice whispered, “Where did you get that?”
Chloe looked at her mother.
“From someone who thought Leo deserved the truth.”
Thomas’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t know what you’re bringing back.”
Chloe almost smiled.
There it was.
Not, I’m sorry.
Not, How did you survive?
Not, Is this my grandson?
Only fear of what truth might cost him.
“I know what you threw away,” Chloe said.
Beatrice began crying.
“Chloe, we were trying to protect—”
“Who?”
The word stopped her.
Chloe’s eyes did not leave her mother’s face.
“Me? Leo? Him? Or yourselves?”
Beatrice looked at Thomas.
Again.
Always Thomas first.
Chloe saw it and felt ten years collapse into one familiar pain.
Leo tugged gently on her hand.
“Mom?”
She looked down.
His face had changed.
The cautious curiosity was still there, but beneath it was something sharper.
He understood more than adults wanted him to.
Thomas stared at the photograph as if it could burn him.
“That man caused trouble.”
Chloe’s voice dropped.
“No. He found it.”
Thomas looked up quickly.
There.
The reaction.
Recognition.
Guilt.
Panic.
Beatrice clutched the doorframe.
“Chloe, please.”
“Please what?”
“Not here.”
Chloe looked at the porch.
The lantern.
The black door.
The place where she had once begged not to be abandoned.
“No,” she said.

“Here is exactly where this starts.”
