Chapter 1

My Mother-in-Law Ruined My Wedding Dress—Then I Exposed Her Secret at the Altar

Eleanor Whitmore ruined my wedding dress two hours before I was supposed to marry her son.

She poured something dark and foul across the lace bodice, watched it spread down the white silk like a wound, and left a note tucked into my veil.

You were supposed to disappear.

For ten seconds, I could not move.

The dress hung from the chapel dressing-room door, stained from chest to hem.

My bridesmaids cried.

My mother covered her mouth.

The wedding planner whispered that we could delay.

My father looked at me in his black tuxedo and asked only one question.

“Maya, do you still want to walk?”

I looked at the ruined dress.

Then at the bouquet on the table.

Inside the white roses was a small sealed envelope no one else knew about.

Not Daniel.

Not Eleanor.

Not the two hundred guests waiting inside the chapel.

Only my father knew.

And the detectives outside.

“Yes,” I said.

My father’s face tightened with pride and pain.

So I put the dress on.

Stained lace.

Filthy silk.

Veil pinned perfectly over shaking shoulders.

When the chapel doors opened, every whisper died.

Daniel stood at the altar in his black tuxedo, face pale beneath the chandeliers.

His mother Eleanor sat in the front pew wearing navy silk and diamonds, smiling like she had already won.

Then she saw I had walked in anyway.

Her smile vanished.

My father held my arm as we moved down the aisle.

Every step made the chapel quieter.

Eleanor stood suddenly and stepped into the aisle behind us.

“You were supposed to disappear,” she whispered.

I stopped in front of Daniel.

He looked at the stained gown.

For one brief second, he smirked.

Then I reached into my bouquet and removed the sealed evidence envelope.

“You ruined the dress,” I said quietly.

“Not the evidence.”

Daniel’s smile died.

“Maya…”

“What did you do?”

I placed the envelope on the altar.

“I proved you both forged my father’s signature.”

The chapel doors opened behind us.

My father’s voice rang through the silence.
