Chapter 5

Eleanor ruined the dress because she sensed the trap too late.
That morning, she entered the bridal suite smiling.
She brought champagne no one asked for.
She complimented my veil.
She touched the sleeve of my wedding gown and said, “Lovely.”
That was when I saw her eyes move to the bouquet.
Just once.
The bouquet was on the vanity.
White roses.
Baby’s breath.
A sealed envelope hidden beneath silk ribbon.
I stepped between her and the flowers.
Her smile changed.
“Private nerves, Maya?”
“Just careful.”
She looked at me for a long time.
Then at my father, who was resting in the chapel office with Clara.
Eleanor asked, “Is your father well enough for all this?”
“He is well enough to walk me down the aisle.”
“How heroic.”
The word came out like a threat.
Twenty minutes later, my mother called me into the hall to help with a missing pin.
It took less than three minutes.
When I returned, the room smelled sour.
Dark liquid dripped from the front of my dress.
The stain spread across the lace bodice, down the skirt, onto the floor.
My veil had been twisted around the hanger.
A folded note sat on the ruined train.
You were supposed to disappear.
My maid of honor screamed.
My mother began crying.
The planner said we could get another dress from a boutique.
But Eleanor had not ruined fabric.
She had made a statement.
Walk in stained, and be humiliated.
Refuse to walk, and give Daniel time to destroy evidence, blame hysteria, and spin the cancellation.
I stared at the dress until my father entered.
He looked at the stain.
Then at me.
Then he noticed the bouquet still untouched on the vanity.
His eyes sharpened.
“She missed it,” he said.
I nodded.
“She ruined the dress.”
My voice sounded far away.
“Not the evidence.”
My father lifted the gown carefully.
“Then we walk.”
My mother whispered, “Maya, people will stare.”
I looked toward the chapel doors.
“Good.”
May you like
By then, I wanted them to.
