Chapter 4

I did not confront Daniel immediately.

That may have saved us.

Not our relationship.

The evidence.

Clara told me to act normal.

“Smile at dinner.”

“Answer his calls.”

“Keep the wedding moving.”

“Let guilty people believe time is on their side.”

That was harder than I expected.

Daniel touched my shoulder, and I wondered if his hand had held the forged document.

Eleanor hugged me, and I smelled her perfume over the thought of her writing lies beside my father’s name.

Every wedding meeting became surveillance.

Every seating chart.

Every vendor payment.

Every whispered conversation between mother and son.

I started recording when they entered rooms.

I backed up emails.

I asked the hospital for visitor logs.

I requested footage from the private wing where my father recovered.

Eleanor had visited him twice when I was not there.

Daniel had visited once.

The hospital camera showed him entering with a leather folio.

He left without it.

A nurse remembered Eleanor asking whether my father’s right hand was still weak.

At first, she thought it was concern.

Now it looked like preparation.

Clara hired a handwriting expert.

Then a forensic document examiner.

Then a private investigator who found Whitmore Holdings had already prepared acquisition filings for Bennett Heritage properties.

Not after the wedding.

Before.

The plan was simple.

Marry me.

Use forged authority to transfer control.

Announce a “family merger.”

Sell three historic properties my father had protected for decades.

Pay down Whitmore debt.

Keep me silent with marriage, humiliation, and confusion.

Clara said, “They are not just stealing from your father.”

“They are making you the ribbon around the theft.”

I sat in her office for a long time after that.

Then I asked, “Can we stop the wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Can we arrest them before the wedding?”

“Possibly.”

“Can we let them show everyone who they are first?”

Clara looked at me.

Then smiled slightly.

“You are your father’s daughter.”

So we made a plan.

The original evidence would stay with Clara until the ceremony.

Detectives would wait outside the chapel after probable cause was confirmed.

And I would carry one sealed copy inside my bouquet.

Not because I was brave.

Because Eleanor loved public power.

So I decided to take it from her publicly.
