The first person to move was not Daniel.
It was Eleanor.
She stepped toward the altar with one hand lifted, reaching for the envelope.
My father blocked her.
He did not raise his voice.
He did not touch her.
He simply stepped into her path with the calm of a man who had built empires and buried better enemies.
“Do not.”
Eleanor’s face twisted.
“This is absurd.”
My father looked at her.
“No, Eleanor.”
“Absurd was thinking I would not recognize my own signature.”
The guests gasped.
Daniel turned toward him.
“Robert, you’re confused.”
My father smiled.
That smile was colder than anger.
“I had a stroke, Daniel.”
“I did not become useful to fools.”
Clara entered from the side aisle carrying a black legal case.
Two detectives waited just beyond the chapel doors.
They did not rush.
That made it worse.
Everything about them said this had already been arranged.
Daniel saw them.
His skin lost color.
Eleanor looked around, searching for allies.
People who had smiled at her five minutes earlier now avoided eye contact.

Clara opened the case and removed copies of the forged transfer papers.
“The original documents are preserved.”
“The hospital logs are preserved.”
“The security footage is preserved.”
“The handwriting analysis is complete.”
Daniel’s hands tightened at his sides.
“Maya, this is not what you think.”
I looked at him.
“I hoped it wasn’t.”
“That is the worst part.”
For a moment, his mask slipped.
Not into love.
Into annoyance that I had made him explain himself in public.
Eleanor whispered, “You ungrateful little nobody.”
My father turned toward the chapel entrance.
“The detectives are waiting outside.”
The doors opened wider.
Detectives Hayes and Monroe stepped inside.
Every guest turned.
